Venkataramana Temple

Venkataramana Temple

The Venkataramana Temple, constructed during the 16th century by Muthiyalu Nayaka (Muthyala Nayaka), stands as the largest and most architecturally significant temple within the lower fort complex of the historic Gingee Fort. Dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, this magnificent shrine represents classical Vijayanagara-style architecture, renowned for its grand 7-tiered Rajagopuram, expansive pillared mandapams, and intricate stone relief panels detailing scenes from the Ramayana, Dashavatara, and Samudra Manthan legends. Though the sanctum is now inactive and many of its original monolithic pillars were removed during French occupation in the 18th century to decorate the base of the Dupleix statue in Puducherry, the monument remains an protected national heritage site managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
